General Information
 
The concept:
The general concept we have chosen to shape the event around is “mass greening / creating a river of green” across the UK so the idea is that launch events would be centred around planting. We are hoping this will capture the press attention particularly because this can be linked into the fact that 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity.
 
Press Launch:
The RHS will be organising a national press launch on 24 March, before the local events, to announce this is happening and start generating the media buzz. In partnership with a local group, the RHS will stage a “greening event” which the press would be invited to attend.
 
Local Events:
The hope is that as many groups as possible hold launch events on the designated weekend, 27-28 March, so that not only can we generate some press coverage before the event but also after the event by reporting on how many plants were planted etc. In order to maximise the potential for press coverage we would need each group participating to “register” their event with us; this would be a simple matter of telling us the date, time and location of their event and providing a brief description of what they will be doing on the day.
 
Support for your local event:
In addition to organising the press launch, the RHS is creating support materials for all groups – finalists, region/nation in Bloom participants, Neighbourhoods – who organise a launch event on the designated dates. The support packs will include suggested ideas of what you can do on the day, general information about biodiversity, template press releases, template promotional materials (to which your event details can be added) etc.

What to think about when planning your event
 
Impact – Will there be good “before and after” images or another easy way to show what you achieved on the day?
 
Scale – Will what you have done be significant? Eg. Will the numbers of bulbs/trees/shrubs planted; the size of the space you “greened up” (transformed); the impact on biodiversity; the amount of carbon reduction; the number of volunteers involved, etc. be significant?
 
Community participation – Don’t forget that in order to raise the profile of your local campaign, be it “in Bloom” or It’s Your Neighbourhood, you want to get local people involved.
 
Benefit – Can you identify/measure the benefit to the community and/or to the environment of the work you have done?
 
Sustainable – Is what you have done on your launch day going to remain and be maintained? The idea is to do something with lasting benefit NOT something that is just a one-off for the day.
 
Support – Is there a local “celebrity” or VIP who might be willing to come along to and support your local event to help get the media and the community’s attention?
 
What kind of activities to plan for the day
 
The theme for the launch is the “mass greening” of Britain or creating a “River of green” running all across Britain and so it would be great if launch events could focus on some kind of planting or “greening” activity and since 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity this theme could also be incorporated . Activities could include things such as:
- Bulb planting
- Tree planting
- Transforming a forgotten site or grey space to green space
- A wildlife focused project (Eg. installing bird and/or bat boxes, planting a butterfly garden, etc.
- Cleaning up a green space which has been neglected/abused (Eg. Clearing up litter and graffiti to help the plant and wild life; clearing a stream or canal of debris and litter etc.)
- Running a window box/hanging basket planting day where community members can come and plant up window boxes to take home (you might even consider planting window box herb garden or hanging baskets with strawberries)
 
What you do on the day is entirely up to you but it would be great if it can fit with the theme so that we can then measure the impact of the event all across the UK (Eg. in numbers of trees planted or amount of green space improved etc.).
 
What we are hoping to achieve
 
Our primary objectives for the launch event are to raise awareness of the campaigns UK-wide and to support groups in raising their own profiles locally. We intend to do as much as we can BEFORE the event through the press launch on 24 March and associated press activity and will be using any/all figures we have at our disposal beforehand to capture the media’s attention. In addition to what we already know about the impact of Britain in Bloom and It’s Your Neighbourhood, we also need to be able to tell the press when and where events are taking place so if you are planning to run an event, please fill out the attached form and return it to us ASAP.
 
It would be great to be able to have some impressive facts to quote to the press AFTER the event as well. So please keep a record of exactly what happened at your local event including how many plants planted (bulbs, trees, shrubs etc.), how many volunteers participated, the size of the space you transformed, the number of hours worked etc.
 
Oh and please take some before and after photos; the media loves a good image!

Once we have received your participation form we will send you the support pack with the template promotional materials, template press release, information about biodiversity etc.
